Mr. Aveek Binkam Biswas, Head of Corporate Communications at Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Ltd. (SEEPCO), has reiterated the company’s commitment to deepening the application of digital innovation across its operations, in support of Nigeria’s ongoing energy transformation.

Biswas made this known while receiving an Award of Sponsorship Appreciation from the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Chapel, during the 2025 NUJ-NAN Press Week Lecture/Symposium held on Thursday in Lagos.

Commending the NUJ-NAN Chapel for successfully organizing the event themed “Transforming Energy: The Digital Evolution of Oil and Gas,” Biswas emphasized SEEPCO’s dedication to fostering innovation, technology, and sustainability in the energy sector.

“We are honoured to have participated in this important gathering, which reflects our shared commitment to advancing conversations around innovation, technology, and sustainability within Nigeria’s energy sector,” he said.

Highlighting the company’s strides in digital transformation, Biswas noted that SEEPCO has deployed several technology-driven platforms, including:

A real-time digital incident reporting system

A Digital Unsafe Act and Unsafe Condition (UAUC) reporting tool

A Safety Observation Reporting Tracking (SORT) system

A streamlined e-Permit to Work (PTW) system

“These platforms are designed to enhance transparency, improve compliance, and enable timely responsiveness throughout our operations,” he explained.

Biswas further noted that these initiatives are part of SEEPCO’s broader strategy to conduct responsible oil and gas exploration and production, aligned with Nigeria’s economic goals and global industry standards.

“While we take pride in these achievements, we also recognize that our journey is ongoing. Events like this reinforce the importance of collaboration—between industry, media, and society—to drive technological innovation that enhances safety, efficiency, and sustainability,” he added.

He acknowledged the critical role of the media as a strategic partner in shaping accurate and constructive narratives around Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

According to him, continued collaboration with stakeholders such as the NUJ-NAN Chapel will help sustain dialogue and action toward a more innovative and sustainable energy future for the country.

Women, the pillars of our society, are resilient and determined as they play essential roles in nurturing families and leading businesses. Despite facing challenges like limited financial resources and unequal opportunities, they persist, inspiring generations and driving positive change.

In honour of Women’s History Month, Vcare for Development Foundation (VCDF), in collaboration with Sterling Oil Exploration & Energy Production Co. Ltd. (SEEPCO) and the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (LDSVA), embarked on a transformative journey to empower 100 community women, focusing on sexual and domestic violence prevention, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship, on March 27, 2024, in Eti-Osa LGA, Lagos State.

When women are empowered, they become catalysts for progress, influencing not only their own lives but also the lives of their families and those around them. The programme gave the women the opportunity to acquire knowledge on tools that can help their businesses grow, also providing a safe space for women to learn and connect with others, making them feel more confident and capable in making decisions for their businesses.

Distinguished guests present at the event were Mrs. Bello Oluwakemi, Head of the Field Operations Department, Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (LDSVA), Chief Mrs. Eletu-Odibo Wasilat, Community Development Committee Chairman of Eti-Osa LGA, Lagos State, and Mrs. Adenike Akintoye, Head of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Unit, Eti Osa LGA. 

While giving her feedback, Chief Mrs. Eletu-Odibo Wasilat said, “community-driven efforts like this initiative are instrumental in driving sustainable change and enabling women to realise their full potential.”

Mrs. Bello Oluwakemi noted during her closing remark, “training women in our communities will improve their livelihoods and contribute to household income, thereby leading to better standards of living.”

This collaborative initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – Gender Equality (SDG 5) and Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), which aim to ensure everyone is treated equally and reduce differences between people. 

VCDF will continue to educate and empower women for a greater inclusion in society, supporting their advancement and ensuring their meaningful participation in all spheres of life. Living healthy lives can be enabled by embracing and maintaining cleanliness in our urban surroundings, we not only enhance the hygiene of our streets and drains but also contribute to mitigating the adverse effects of pollution and promoting a sustainable future for generations to come.

On April 6th, 2024, a community-driven initiative took to the streets of Victoria Island, Lagos, in a concerted effort to combat littering, blocked drains, thereby reducing flooding and the deteriorating cleanliness of the neighborhood. 

The Street Hygiene and Cleanliness Campaign, organized by the Vcare for Development Foundation (VCDF), in collaboration with Sterling Oil Exploration & Energy Production Co. Ltd. (SEEPCO), Iru-Victoria Island LCDA and Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) saw an impressive turnout of volunteers and stakeholders determined to make a tangible difference in their environment.

The campaign aimed to promote cleanliness and environmental sustainability in Victoria Island, addressing issues like littering, improper waste disposal and consequent flooding. By providing donations of sanitation tools like rakes, pickers, brooms, and bin bags as well as personal protective equipment like coveralls and gloves, VCDF inspired volunteers and stakeholders to take proactive steps to stop the spread of disease, build community pride, and maintain a clean environment.

The dignitaries present at the event were Princess (Hon.) Rasheedat Abiodun Adu, Executive Chairperson, Iru-Victoria Island LCDA; Mrs. Ogabi Adetokunbo, Council Manager; Mr. S.O. Omoteji, Head of Human Resources, Mr. Odu Olufemi, Head of the Environment, all from Iru Victoria Island LCDA; Mrs. Aramide Olaniyan, Head of Corporate Engagement,  Mr. Ebenezer Otubu,  Deputy Head, Street Sanitation Services and Mr. Gbenga Adebayo Fagbola, Regional Manager, Lagos East 1, Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

Beyond the immediate benefits of an immaculate surrounding, it has encouraged a culture of social responsibility among the workforce and promoted community unity. 

Speaking at the event, Mr. Odu Olufemi said, ‘the VCDF initiative is praiseworthy, and maintaining effective sanitation practices is essential for ensuring a healthier Lagos State through recycling materials, segregating waste, desilting drainage systems, and clearing sidewalks for safety and easy access.’

Mrs. Aramide Olaniyan expressed, ‘together, we are not only cleaning streets but also spreading awareness about the value of environmental stewardship for a better tomorrow.’

VCDF is dedicated to embracing sustainability to protect healthy habitats and foster a culture of social responsibility, ensuring the welfare of current and future generations.

By coming together to tackle environmental challenges, residents and stakeholders demonstrated their commitment to creating a cleaner, safer, and more vibrant neighborhood for all.

In our daily busy routines, we often overlook some of our community members like victims of trafficking, domestic violence, special needs and abandoned children in correctional centres or orphanages, yet they constitute an invaluable and integral part of our society.

Vcare for Development Foundation (VCDF) and Sterling Oil Exploration & Energy Production Co. Ltd. (SEEPCO) collaborated to create transformative events at Ipaja Transit Home on the December 23, 2023, and Ketu Special Children Centre and Correctional Centre for Junior Boys on December 30, 2023.

The aim was to instill joy and belongingness among underserved communities and heartfelt collaboration with the Ministry of Youth & Social Development.

At the Ipaja Transit Home, VCDF brought positivity to over 32 exploited and abused residents and 6 caregivers. The outreach extended to more than 75 residents and 47 caregivers at the Ketu Special Children Centre and the Correctional Centre for Junior Boys, where thoughtful gifts and educational materials were distributed to support these institutions, offering a gesture of support and care to these vulnerable individuals and their dedicated caretakers. 56 volunteers devoted their quality time engaging in fun activities with the children, fostering positive impact in the lives of the vulnerable children.

The events were graced by esteemed dignitaries from the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development including Mrs. Adenike Obilana, Deputy Director, Child Development Department, Ms. Caroline Inegbedion, Deputy Director, Correctional and Elderly Care Services, Mr. Fatai Oladayo Salu, Principal, Correctional Centre for Junior Boys and Ms. Oluwakemi Agoro – Matron, Ketu Special Children Centre.

Ms. Caroline Inegbedion expressed, ‘Participating in these events fills our hearts with profound pride and joy. We extend our sincere gratitude to VCDF for their steadfast support and authentic compassion toward these special children, who too frequently contend with feelings of exclusion from society.’

These initiatives align seamlessly with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), gender equality (SDG 5), focusing on reduced inequalities (SDG 10), and the promotion of peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16). Mrs. Obilana Adenike remarked, ‘Through these programmes, VCDF has empowered individuals facing vulnerabilities, making profound contributions to sustainable development. These transformative events act as a powerful catalyst, actively fostering and promoting equal opportunities for all.’

Vcare for Development Foundation has partnered with the Ministries of Education of Lagos and Akwa Ibom states to host its annual Science Project Exhibition and Competition.

The foundation disclosed in a statement signed by its management on Tuesday that the programme was inspired by World Science Day with the theme, “Science for and with Society”.

It also claimed that the initiative was organised to inspire young learners to delve into scientific exploration and experimentation, fostering curiosity and innovation, adding, “Science and technology are pivotal in unlocking human potential and addressing societal challenges.”

Speaking at the event, the Lagos Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, represented by the Director of Science and Technology, Ministry of Basic & Secondary Education, Grace Akinfoyewa said, “This initiative is a remarkable step toward inspiring our students to embrace science as a tool for solving real-world challenges. It aligns perfectly with our educational goals and demonstrates the power of collaboration in nurturing innovation and excellence among young learners.”

According to her, this is a hands-on learning opportunity for students to fully harness their skills and knowledge to drive innovation and contribute meaningfully to progress and development.

The initiative, which started in 2023, upscaled 179 schools engaged across Education Districts I, III & V in Lagos, involving over 4,000 students and 215 principals and teachers. 53 of 87 short-listed proposals received financial and instructional support for developing their science projects.

In October, 50 schools from Lagos State competed at the district level, with 17 advancing to the finale. The Inter-District Competition, held on November 23, 2024, at the Lagos State Education Resource Centre, featured innovative models presented to a panel of experts and an audience of over 100 students, teachers, and volunteers, highlighting creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork.

Sonmori Senior Comprehensive High School, Ifako-Ijaiye of District I emerged as the winner with their Smart Obstacle Walking Stick model, while Ilogbo-Elegba Senior Grammar School and Festac Senior Grammar School of District V were the first and second runners-up with their Vacuum Cleaner and Digital Waste Truck projects, respectively.

Meanwhile, in Akwa Ibom State, Qua Iboe Church Senior Science School, Ndon Eyo, emerged winners with their Wastewater Treatment Irrigation Prototype with over 1000 students from 14 secondary schools representing and providing resources to develop science projects.

People from all walks of life attended the event including the Director of Admin & Human Resources, District I, Mr. Taiwo Aremu; Director of Co-curricular Science and Technology, District I, Mrs. Oyegbile Oluwakemi; Director of Co-curricular Science and Technology, District V, Mr. Bankole,

SEEPCO is Refining Education Through Chess in Slums, Lagos

Chess is a game that many have played in their childhood and made them successful brains today. When thinking about increasing children’s intellectual development, chess has become an important component. It is said to have built creative thinking, raised IQ scores, enhanced memory, and sustained problem-solving skills. Playing chess has helped in adjusting and acquiring different approaches and how to make the next step to victory.

On October 14, 2023, Sterling Oil Exploration & Energy Production Co. Ltd (SEEPCO) organised a ‘Chess Beyond Borders’ event for the children from slums at Bon Voyage Hotel, Lagos.

Dignitaries like Mr. Sola Aiyepeku, Executive Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Tokunbo Fagun, Chairman, Lagos State Chess Association, Ms. Esther Hunkuten, Scholarship Manager, Chess in Slum, Africa, and Mr. Samuel Awobajo, Project Coordinator, Chess in Slum, Africa, graced the event.

At the event, Mr. Sola Aiyepeku, Executive Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission said, “The Chess in Slums initiative ensures that the children from the marginalised part of the society have a shot at a sustainable future. Such initiatives would help to achieve the desired goal of transforming lives.’’

Being a child-development programme, this event was designed to enhance strategic and critical thinking skills, and mathematical skills of children by cultivating a passion for the game amongst children. The event gathered exceptional minds, future leaders, and chess stars from the slums. There were children from various backgrounds, cultures, and capabilities.

 

Mr. Tokunbo Fagun, Chairman, Lagos State Chess Association said, “Education is the cornerstone of progress, and through chess, it is igniting a spark of curiosity and intellectual growth in children.’’

 

Chess is the gymnasium of the mind. It has no boundaries; it transcends language, age, and social status, unites, teaches us valuable life lessons, and creates lifelong friendships.

 

With this initiative, SEEPCO is committed to empowering slum children with expertise that will shape their future, training them to defeat any challenge that lies ahead. SEEPCO embarks on a journey that goes beyond the 64 squares of a chessboard, breaking barriers and building bridges towards a more comprehensive and impartial world.

Effective nurturing is vital for a child’s development. Raising and understanding a child with Down Syndrome can bring immense happiness and fulfilment to parents, caregivers, and the communities.

 

On December 11, 2023, Sterling Oil Exploration & Energy Production Co. Ltd. (SEEPCO) organised an event themed ‘Celebrating Abilities’ at Modupe Cole Memorials, Lagos. This initiative aimed to shed light and enhance the emotional healthiness of children with Down Syndrome and bring joy and enjoyment to their souls. The event was designed to celebrate, boost, and support them. The event was primarily structured to praise the mothers who have displayed their responsibility and sacrifices in raising children with Down Syndrome with a token of appreciation and gratitude, and for the children who have overcome their challenges and succeeded in their objectives.

We are passionate about helping the children with Down Syndrome live their lives to the fullest. This initiative showcases that Down Syndrome children are like us. If given appropriate medical care, supportive family, and special educational services, those with Down Syndrome can lead full and healthy lives. What inspires me the most about them is how incredibly strong and determined they are.’

 

Down syndrome is a genetic condition characterised by developmental delays and learning disability. Most of the time Down Syndrome occurs by chance. Children with Down Syndrome can greatly benefit from early treatment. Caring for these children requires comprehensive medical expertise and a compassionate, holistic approach.

 

Mrs. Abosede Oyeniran – Principal, Modupe Cole Memorials, Lagos, Lagos State Ministry of Education, said, ‘Children with Down Syndrome are the most loving souls. They have exceptional traits. Early intervention is critical for them, as it can help support their intellectual, physical, and social development. By providing appropriate support and resources for families of young individuals with Down Syndrome, we can help ensure that they have the ingredients they need to thrive and live fulfilling lives.’

 

Caring for a child with special needs has many blessings. SEEPCO believes that every child with Down Syndrome should receive the rightful education, participate wholly in society, and develop their communication, confidence, and independence.
